This might not be the first transgender wedding in India but it definitely is an event that has set an example. Yes, Madhuri Sarode, a transgender, married her boyfriend, Jay Kumar Sharma in an open ceremony organised at a temple in Mumbai.
Madhuri and Jay met through social media and have been together for almost five years now. They got married according to Hindu customs and Madhuri feels that there is no reason as to why she should hide her relationship from the world.
Even though the LGBT community in India has been given equal rights to vote and are entitled to receive unbiased education and other provisions, rules for their marriage have still not been specified. Adding to this Madhuri confidently said that she's ready to fight with the system to live a happy married life.
This wedding is not only a step toward the empowerment of the LGBT community but is also an appeal to the citizens of the country to make transgenders feel like normal people.
Much power to you Madhuri!
